The Marbella Red Wine List
The Marbella Red Wine List
features over 100 different red wines from all around the
world. Because Marbella is a Spanish restaurant, we hope you
will try a red Spanish wine from time to time. This list of
red wines has been personally selected by Manolo Torres. He
grew up in Spain and learned to pick grapes on the family
farm. His father still grows grapes commercially in Spain. We
feature wines from countries all around the world. These
international wines come from California, Australia, France,
Argentina, Chile, France, Italy and South Africa.
Because this is our first
year, we have not had an opportunity to submit our wine list
to the Wine Spectator Magazine for inclusion in their annual
awards. But we are certain that when we do, we will receive an
"Award of Excellence", as we have year after year at our
downtown Cleveland restaurant, Mallorca.

Spain is currently producing
some excellent red wines. With its commitment to adapting new
technology and implementing new growing concepts, Spain has
steadily produced some very impressive and diverse wines. You
would be hard pressed to find another winemaking country with
such a wide spectrum in style and quality. Whether the
occasion calls for an international styled Cabernets or an
indigenous grape variety, Spain has something for everyone –
and every dish.
Spectacular food matches stem from Spain’s tapas
tradition. Hot and cold, sweet and salty, multi-flavored, surf
and turf: tapas demand that its red wines and sherries
accompany a dizzying array of challenging combinations, giving
them a versatility that matches the dynamic bounty of
springtime dishes but with the fruit and acid balance to
showcase, not overwhelm, different flavors.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape
(shah-toh-nuhf-doo-PAHP)
This important appellation that
surrounds the village of Châteaneuf-du-Pape is in the southern
portion of France's Rhône region. Its name means "new castle
of the pope," referring to the summer palace built in the area
during the 1300s and used by the popes from Avignon. The
area's stony soil retains the day's heat into the evening
hours, which allows the grapes to ripen to their fullest.
Fully ripened grapes have a high sugar content that can
convert into higher alcohol levels. The red wines are
traditionally big, rich, and full-bodied (see body) with
spicy, raspberry flavors. They're capable of aging for 5 to 20
years. A lighter beaujolais-style red, made with carbonic
maceration, is also produced. The white wines are usually
crisp with flavors that hint of peaches, pears, melons, and,
sometimes, licorice. Wines with the papal coat of arms
embossed on the bottle above the label indicate that they are
estate bottled.

When
friends get together at Marbella, they often share
pitchers of our delicious Sangria. From its humble roots
in Spain, Sangria has grown to become a popular,
refreshing party drink around the world. Every
restaurant has its own recipe (ours is secret) -
typically a mix of wine, brandy and fresh fruits, served
over ice.

Sangria is
a red wine punch, although it can also be made with
white wine - it is then known as 'Sangria Blanco'.
Sangria was originally created in Spain with Rioja and
other Spanish reds. Soon, however, the Cava-producing
area adopted a sparkling white version. In the south of
Spain Sangria is called zurra, and is created with peach
or nectarine.
Sangria is typically
created from red wine, fruit juices, soda water, fruit
and sometimes brandy. When making your own Sangria, use
a good quality red wine, and be sure to let it chill
overnight. Use Rioja to get the authentic Spanish
flavor, but definitely choose something you like -
you're the one drinking it! In the morning, pour into a
pitcher full of ice cubes, garnish with fresh fruit, and
enjoy.
